Tzeltal Speakers

Tzeltal speakers live in the Chiapas region of Mexico in the late 1960s. They were influential in establishing the notion of a basic level of categorization. (See Program Metaphors Are Concrete.)

In a famous anthropological study, an anthropologist went out with them in the environment and asked them to point at what they saw and name it.

When it came to trees, they used words like "oak" and "maple." Much is made that their names corresponded to the biological genus of the living things they pointed at.
